Protection of endangered species of animals and plants (CITES)

The movement of certain specimens as traveler's personal belongings is possible without the required CITES documentation upon fulfilling certain requirements set out in Art. 57 and Art. 58 of Commission Regulation (EC) no 865/2006.

The current list of species endangered with extinction is set out in the Commission Regulation (EU) No 709/2010.

Specimens endangered with extinction will be, for example:

  • live birds, boa constrictors;
  • stuffed specimens of endangered species;
  • articles made of skins of snakes, crocodiles;
  • furs, hats and other articles made of wild cats, wolves;
  • corals and articles made of corals;
  • certain shells;
  • skins of wolves, bears, wild cats;
  • preparations of Traditional Chinese Medicine, such as balms, ointments, patches, pills which contain derivates of species endangered with extinction.

Legal basis:

  1. Council Regulation (EC) No. 338/97 of 9 December 1996 on the protection of species of wild fauna by regulating trade therein,
  2. Commission Regulation (EC) No. 865/2006 of 4 May 2006 laying down detailed rules concerning the implementation of Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97 on the protection of species of wild fauna and flora by regulating trade therein,
  3. Commission Regulation (EC) No. 100/2008 of 4 February 2008 amending, as regards sample collections and certain formalities relating to the trade in species of wild fauna and flora, Regulation (EC) No. 865/2006 laying down detailed rules for the implementation of Council Regulation (EC) No. 338/97,
  4. Commission Regulation (EU) No 709/2010 of 22 July 2010 amending Council regulation (EC) 338/97 on the protection of species of wild fauna and flora by regulating trade in therein (the list of endangered species),
  5. Commission Regulation (EU) No 828/2011 of 17 August 2011 suspending the introduction into the Union of specimens of certain species of wild fauna and flora.
